{"id":4432,"date":"2011-10-07T10:54:33","date_gmt":"2011-10-07T17:54:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.behindthepinecurtain.com\/wordpress\/?p=4432"},"modified":"2011-10-07T10:54:33","modified_gmt":"2011-10-07T17:54:33","slug":"regents-endorse-plan-to-split-sju-from-abbey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.behindthepinecurtain.com\/wordpress\/regents-endorse-plan-to-split-sju-from-abbey\/","title":{"rendered":"Regents endorse plan to split SJU from abbey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u201cThe university will remain as a major educational and pastoral work of the abbey, and the monks of St. John\u2019s will remain a vital part of the university.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><strong>Regents endorse plan to split SJU from abbey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The St. John\u2019s University Board of Regents today endorsed a plan that would create a new civil corporation that splits the university off from St. John\u2019s Abbey, St. John\u2019s Preparatory School and the Liturgical Press.<\/p>\n<p>The Prep School and Liturgical Press will remain operating divisions of the existing St. John\u2019s Abbey corporation when the new university civil corporation becomes effective July 1. The corporate board of directors of St. John\u2019s Abbey authorized the creation of the new civil corporation in early September.<\/p>\n<p>That came after five years of work toward a \u201creconfigured governance and management structure for the university,\u201d according to a joint statement from Abbot John Klassen and St. John\u2019s University President Robert Koopmann.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goals were to enhance governance authority for the university, reduce organizational complexity, and to strengthen the relationship between the abbey and university into the future,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>Many enterprises, including most Catholic colleges and universities sponsored by religious orders, have created independent corporations to fulfill their missions, according to the statement.
