An open letter to members of the entire community of Collegeville, especially the Saint John’s Preparatory School Class of \u201865 Reunion Committee\u00a0including\u00a0Kevin Campbell,\u00a0John Fogarty,\u00a0Don Genereux,\u00a0Al Rudolph, David Thorman and\u00a0Ray Turcotte.<\/p>\n

Andert Will Attend Reunion This Weekend, His Victim Will Not<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Andert_1979\"<\/a>Father Tom Andert, a 1965 graduate of Saint John’s Preparatory School is celebrating his 50th high school reunion this weekend.\u00a0Andert is\u00a0acting prior at Saint John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota.<\/p>\n

One of Father Tom Andert’s “alleged” victims, Ben,\u00a0was\u00a0a 1995\u00a0graduate of Saint John’s Prep School. Much of Father Andert’s history with Ben is well documented.\u00a0In 2002, Abbot Klassen even offered to pay for Ben’s therapy – an arrangement brokered by another monk perpetrator.<\/p>\n

Ben’s class, the class of 1995, is celebrating its 20th class reunion this weekend.<\/p>\n

Ben\u00a0will not be attending his 20-year reunion, however. He committed suicide in December of 2014.<\/p>\n

In one of Ben’s\u00a0last email exchanges with me, Ben\u00a0referred to the\u00a0“horrible culture of\u00a0hypocrisy<\/span>” at Saint John’s.\u00a0That hypocrisy will be\u00a0on full display this weekend.<\/p>\n

At 4:30pm on Friday (June 26), Father Tom Andert will say mass for his classmates.<\/p>\n

Reunion committee, I respectfully urge you to request that a replacement be found.<\/p>\n

Despite being accused of misconduct by at least three former students, his being removed\u00a0as Prep School headmaster in 1994 due to his relationship with Ben, his spending time at Saint Luke\u00a0Institute, his having\u00a0a history of drinking and sophomoric antics\u00a0—\u00a0including playing cards in his underwear with college students\u00a0—\u00a0Father Tom Andert has yet to be placed on restriction or be publicly named\u00a0like so\u00a0many of his monastic brothers.\u00a0[ View<\/a> ]\n

Not only is Andert not on restriction, he is currently prior at the abbey and is reportedly supervising<\/em> the older monks who are under\u00a0Safety Plans (for misconduct) at the abbey.<\/p>\n

When Abbot John Klassen\u00a0is away from the abbey, Father Tom Andert is in charge. If something should happen to Abbot Klassen, Father Andert takes over.<\/p>\n

To date, no one has stood up and said with regard to Father Tom Andert, “Enough!”<\/p>\n

Perhaps that person is among your committee?<\/p>\n[Note: When Father Tom Andert was named prior in 2007, Ben flew to Minnesota in an effort to bring attention to his misconduct and stop the appointment. He was unsuccessful.]\n

 <\/p>\n

Father Figure<\/strong><\/p>\n

Two\u00a0former Prep School students recently recalled their\u00a0experiences with Father Tom Andert. The students were classmates in the late 1970s. Neither graduated. Each reported that Father Tom Andert became a\u00a0family friend. Each reported being pursued by Father Tom Andert. Each\u00a0reported Father Tom Andert saying, \u201cYou\u2019re the\u00a0son I never had.\u201d \u00a0Each is deciding upon the best next step with regard to this matter.<\/p>\n

Ben’s story was\u00a0no different.<\/p>\n[Note: Ben’s mother recently shared that Father Tom Andert\u00a0used the same \u201cYou\u2019re the\u00a0son I never had\u201d line while at a restaurant in approximately the spring of 1994 with Ben and his mother. Ben’s mother quickly, and firmly,\u00a0reminded Father Tom that Ben already had a father.]\n

Ben was no stranger to Saint John’s Prep School\u00a0when he entered as a sophomore in 1992.\u00a0Father Tom Andert and Ben’s father were at the Prep School around the same time.<\/p>\n

Ben’s first stay at the Prep School was short lived, however. In early September of\u00a01992, Ben called his parents. They were at an Elton John concert. Ben\u00a0told his parents he was homesick and wanted to come home.<\/p>\n

Around Christmas, Ben decided that he would return to the Prep School. Unbeknownst to Ben’s parents, Father Tom Andert had been calling, and persuaded Ben\u00a0to return to the Prep School.<\/p>\n

Over the next eighteen months, Andert and Ben spent far too much time together.<\/p>\n

Several Prep School staff members felt the\u00a0relationship had become inappropriate.<\/p>\n

According to emails from a former Prep employee:<\/p>\n

“Andert fell completely in love with Ben XXXXXX\u00a0and treated him as an equal–not the juvenile high school student he was. \u00a0What a MESS it was for Ben and for Andert!”<\/em> – September 20, 2007<\/p>\n

“[Andert] spoke about [Ben] to me in overly-glowing terms (inappropriately so for a middle-aged man speaking of a teenager) and spent a lot of time with him one on one– going out to dinner, visits in his office, trips to Mpls., etc.”<\/em>\u00a0– September 25, 2007<\/p>\n

“Abbot Timothy met with me, Thamert and Andert and I was asked to provide my observations about Andert’s inappropriate closeness with Ben\u00a0XXXXXX.\u00a0 It was enough information to make the abbot force Tom to fully leave the Prep\u00a0School.”<\/em> \u00a0– September 30, 2007<\/p>\n

And from another Prep employee:<\/p>\n

“I saw\u00a0Andert<\/span>\u00a0tear up over\u00a0Ben<\/span> XXXXXX<\/em>\u00a0in\u00a0his office around 1994…it wasn’t grief, but serious longing I could see in\u00a0his eyes…he said, “don’t you sometimes just want to take these kids in\u00a0your arms and hold them?”\u00a0 I sat there and blinked, and perhaps agreed in a\u00a0vague way, as I was truly afraid of him.”<\/em> –\u00a0December 22, 2014<\/p>\n

Until a few months ago, Ben’s parents didn’t know that Andert had been removed as headmaster due to his “relationship”\u00a0with Ben – or that\u00a0Ben’s suicide attempt took place the night\u00a0before Father Andert’s replacement, Father Mark Thamert, was announced.<\/p>\n

Ben shared that he felt guilty for ruining Andert’s career. Ben\u00a0felt guilty for bringing shame upon his\u00a0family’s name. Ben\u00a0felt guilty for not doing more.<\/p>\n

When Ben attempted suicide\u00a0at the Prep School\u00a0in February of 1994,\u00a0Father Tom Andert was by his side almost immediately. Ben’s parents, unaware of the relationship, entrusted Father Tom Andert with their son.<\/p>\n

Father Tom Andert’s\u00a0published love letters\u00a0[ View<\/a> ] began while Ben was still in the hospital – and as Father Andert was on his way out as headmaster at Saint John’s Preparatory School.<\/p>\n

Again, Ben, let me assure you fully + firmly of my unconditional love for you. I want to be the \u201cgas in your tank\u201d so you can be \u201cthe driver of your car\u201d. I know that my love and support are very important to you, and you can count on this relationship always. You are a wonderful, caring + loving person, and you are going to make it through this experience. I will never give up on you, and you know that!! <\/em>\u00a0–\u00a0Father Tom Andert –\u00a0February 15, 1994<\/p>\n

“I know I keep telling you this, but if I ever had a son, I would want him to be just like you! You are a warm, compassionate, caring + just plain wonderful. I sure love you very very much, as if you are my own kid! Crazy, huh? Imagine having a priest for a dad!!! Wow!”<\/em> – Father Tom Andert –\u00a0February 24, 1994<\/p>\n

Despite being removed as headmaster, Father Tom Andert, from a PR standpoint, remained\u00a0a star for Saint John’s Abbey:<\/p>\n

Fr. Thomas Andert, OSB, who is completing a six-year term as headmaster of Saint John’s Preparatory School, has been selected by the school’s Alumni Association’s board of directors to receive the 1994 Armor of Light Award during a social and dinner celebration at St. Albert’s\u00a0Parish Hall in Albertville, Minn., on April 23.<\/em> – Connections (April 21, 1994)<\/p>\n

Multiple Reports<\/strong><\/p>\n

In October of 2005, Father Tom Andert’s relationship with Ben was reported to the Abbey’s External Review Board and brought to the attention of Abbot John Klassen.<\/p>\n

In January\u00a0of 2006, according to the External Review Board minutes:<\/p>\n

“Andert Complaint: There was a question by a member of the Board as to what happened with the Andert complaint. The Abbot reported that the victim would not come forward.”<\/em> \u00a0– ERB minutes –\u00a0Friday, January 20, 2006<\/p>\n

Abbot Klassen\u00a0was lying. By 2006, the Ben\/Andert story had been told at least twice.<\/p>\n

Ben’s\u00a0parents reported Andert to Abbot Timothy Kelly in 1996. During those meetings, Ben’s\u00a0parents\u00a0were shamed and intimidated.<\/p>\n

With regard to the 1996 meetings, Richard Sipe recently wrote to Klassen:<\/p>\n

“Ben\u2019s parents are in contact with me currently. They spoke with me already in 1996 about Ben\u2019s abuse and his reactions and struggles with it and the \u201cdisrespectful and demeaning\u201d (condescending) way Timothy treated them. They are still hurt and angry about the response of St. John\u2019s.” R<\/em>ichard Sipe –\u00a0April 3, 2015 \u00a0[\u00a0View<\/a>\u00a0]\n

Abbot Timothy Kelly, a credibly-accused perpetrator himself\u00a0[ View<\/a> ], discounted the accusations against Andert.<\/p>\n

Ben came forward again in 2002 to Abbot Klassen, with credibly-accused-monk-perpetrator Father Brennan Maiers working as Ben’s intermediator.<\/p>\n

Ben wrote about his meetings with Brennan:<\/p>\n

“During our \u201ccoffee conversations\u201d we covered everything from my experiences at St. John\u2019s and Tom Andert to our very differing views on monasticism\/the Catholic Church and celibacy. [Brennan]\u00a0did share with me that he had been part of an \u201cinappropriate relationship\u201d as well, and 20 years later the victim sought legal action.”<\/em> Ben –\u00a0October 21, 2007<\/p>\n

With Brennan’s help, Abbot Klassen agreed to pay for Ben’s counseling.<\/p>\n

In an email dated October 25, 2002,\u00a0Abbot John Klassen wrote:<\/p>\n

“Brennan forwarded your request for funding for counseling. It sounds like you have found the right person to work with, someone whom you trust and is approaching this in a systematic way. The abbey will fund this work. Please send the bills to me directly…<\/em> ” – Abbot John Klassen, October 25, 2002.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

At the time Klassen agreed to pay for Ben’s counseling\u00a0(October 25, 2002)\u00a0Father Tom Andert was a\u00a0faculty resident\u00a0at Metten Court,\u00a0campus housing at Saint John’s University.<\/p>\n

Klassen did not replace Father Tom Andert as\u00a0faculty resident.<\/p>\n[Note: Two weeks later, on\u00a0November 9, 2002, SJU student Joshua Guimond disappeared from campus following a visit to Metten Court.]\n

 <\/p>\n[Note: During a phone call on\u00a0November 2, 2007, Abbot John Klassen was made aware of yet another of Father Tom Andert’s “alleged” victims, a (then) sixteen-year-old from the mid-1970s. Several details were shared with Abbot John Klassen with the understanding that they\u00a0would not be made public.]\n

 <\/p>\n

Ben’s Story<\/strong><\/p>\n

In an email dated October of 2007, Ben wrote:<\/p>\n

“Thank you for the opportunity to speak about “my story” with you last night.\u00a0 It’s an incredibly significant component of who I am, and it is has been a long time coming to share it with you…\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 This is an important juncture for me to bring meaning to what has been a very difficult period of my life and I hope to ultimately help others avoid such experiences.”<\/em><\/p>\n

During our conversation, Ben shared Andert’s pursuit, the touching, hugging and kissing which took place for months. Ben\u00a0shared that Andert changed his grades, pulled him from class,\u00a0and providing alcohol to Ben, a minor, in Andert’s\u00a0Prep School office.<\/p>\n

Ben\u00a0shared a bit\u00a0of what happened on a trip with his parents and Andert in Colorado in the summer of 1994. Ben shared that Andert had convinced his parents that they (Andert and Ben) should share a hotel room. With Ben’s parents in a room nearby, Andert came out of the shower wrapped in nothing but a towel.<\/p>\n

Ben shared his horror when Andert took off the towel. Ben didn’t share what happened next. He was too ashamed.<\/p>\n

Ben\u00a0shared, and his parents confirmed, that sometime later that night, Ben made it to his parents’ hotel room and spent the night, terrified, between them.<\/p>\n

Why not Andert?<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Ben, his family and\/or Prep staffers, Father Tom Andert:<\/p>\n

Recruited without Parental Consent
\nHad an Inappropriate Relationship
\nPrompted a Suicide\u00a0Attempt
\nWrote Love Letters
\nChanged Grades
\nServed Alcohol to Minors
\nKissed
\nCaressed
\nExposed<\/p>\n

I, like\u00a0many others,\u00a0believe that Father Tom Andert’s pursuit of Ben, along with Abbot Kelly’s and Abbot\u00a0Klassen’s failure to hold Father Andert accountable – combined\u00a0with the abbey’s “horrible culture of\u00a0hypocrisy” – contributed, if not directly led, to Ben’s suicide.<\/span><\/p>\n

To date, Abbot John Klassen has refused to take action. Perhaps he will listen to you, the\u00a0Saint John’s Preparatory School’s Class of \u201865 Reunion Committee.<\/p>\n

It is time to shine a light on the horrible darkness that is Father Tom Andert.<\/p>\n

Please know that my commitment to the victims of misconduct and abuse by personnel at Saint John’s remains strong – as does my desire to hold those credibly accused accountable. I look forward to celebrating many future reunions with my classmates, the class of 1983, and to someday meet each of you.<\/p>\n
