Allegations of Abuse and/or Misconduct

A 36-year-old cabinet maker from St. Joseph, Minn., filed suit against the Rev. Brennan Maiers in February 1992, charging Maiers had abused him when he was a 9-year-old altar boy. (1992) Brennan Maiers was an assistant pastor in St. Joseph between 1965 and 1968. He reportedly abused a boy in 1966, during his time there. ( 2002)

Fr. Brennan Maiers, 66, who formerly worked in a parish near St. Johns, apologized directly to a victim. (2002)

Abuse allegations and tax problems led, in part, to Fr. Brennan Maiers' and Fr. Blane Wasnie's removal from St. Bernard's Parish (St. Paul, MN) in or around 1990.

Miscellaneous Notes

He served as pastor or assistant pastor in many of our parishes from 1965 to 1990. After earning a certificate in Clinical Pastoral Education from St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth, in 1992, Father Brennan worked as a chaplain in Duluth and St. Cloud. Since 2002 he assists the abbey archivist, and in 2006 he began maintaining the official Abbey Chronicle. (2007)

Maiers allegedly had a relationship with the bookkeeper at St. Bernard's Parish in St. Paul.

John Doe (Joe Johnson) filed suit to bring allegations into the open February 1992 saying Maiers abused him at age 9 in 1966. Johnson had buried his memories of abuse for nearly 20 years. But one evening, sitting at a meeting at St. John's, he said, they came rushing back when someone mentioned Maiers' name. For another five years, Johnson did not say a word. He was afraid of what people might think. His marriage was troubled. He could not stand the thought of other children being hurt the way he had been. On his way to work, he watched utility poles fly by and thought about steering his car into one, he said. Finally, after going to counseling, he wrote a letter to Theisen. When Theisen confronted Maiers, the priest did not deny abusing Johnson and said he felt sorry for hurting him. Johnson said he asked for a written apology from Maiers, but Theisen wouldn't allow it. So he sued under the pseudonym John Doe. Suit settled out of court in late 1992. (eurekaencyclopedia.com)

It was not the first time church leaders had heard about Maiers' sexual activity. He had been cited for indecent conduct by an undercover Minneapolis police officer at an adult movie theater in 1984.(eurekaencyclopedia.com)
