{"id":3220,"date":"2011-04-03T21:01:41","date_gmt":"2011-04-04T04:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.behindthepinecurtain.com\/wordpress\/?p=3220"},"modified":"2011-04-03T21:04:22","modified_gmt":"2011-04-04T04:04:22","slug":"letter-to-the-editor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.behindthepinecurtain.com\/wordpress\/letter-to-the-editor\/","title":{"rendered":"Letter to the Editor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On September 7, 2006 The Record ran an article, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.behindthepinecurtain.com\/wordpress\/?p=228\">Abuse allegations shake St. John\u2019s Abbey<\/a>,\u201d which quoted me as saying \u201cextensive research shows more monks will be named and more victims will come forward.\u201d In the same article, Abbot John Klassen responded to my claim by saying: \u201cThat is totally an unfounded, false statement. I mean false.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, my prediction proved correct when 17 monks were named in a letter co-written by St. John\u2019s Abbey as part of a recent settlement involving nine new victims.<br \/>\n<!--more-->The list of 17 monks includes Br. Steven Lilly, with allegations dating back to 1994. The list does not, however, include the name of Fr. Robert Blumeyer, who was identified by the Abbey in 2006, or Br. Pascal Brisson and Rev. Pirmim Wendt who, according to the StarTribune, also have credible allegations against them.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Since the abuse scandal first broke in 1991, St. John\u2019s has had an opportunity, if not an obligation, to fully disclose the misconduct perpetrated by monks and other personnel. Time and time again the leadership has erred, not on the side of accountability as Klassen claimed in the 2006 article, but on the side of self-preservation. It isn\u2019t working. St. John\u2019s has spent at least 20 years either running from, or hiding, the truth. It\u2019s time to try a different approach. I challenge the Abbot and the entire St. John\u2019s community to address the problem directly. With no other solution in place, I created a web site (behindthepinecurtain.com) to educate the public, hold St. John\u2019s accountable and provide victims with a refuge. Based on my extensive research, I am confident that more monks will be named and more victims will come forward.
