Robert Koopmann will not seek a second term as president of St. John\u2019s University, he announced today.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Koopmann, who has been president of St. John\u2019s since July 2009, will leave the job at the end of the 2011-2012 academic year, he announced. Koopmann has one year left on his three-year appointment and announced his intentions early so that St. John\u2019s could have enough time for a presidential search and transition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cServing as president has been a fulfilling and exhilarating experience,\u201d Koopmann said in a statement released this morning. \u201cSt. John\u2019s is \u2014 and will always remain \u2014 the center of my life, and I am honored to be among those who have provided leadership during its 155-year history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Koopmann said he plans to stay \u201cactively involved in the life of this wonderful community\u201d for the near and distant futures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy passion for teaching and music remain, and I look forward to recommitting myself to the many additional ways I can be of service to St. John\u2019s,\u201d he said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Koopmann replaced interim president Dan Whalen, who held the job briefly after Brother Dietrich Reinhart resigned due to declining health in October 2008. Koopmann has been professor of music at St. John\u2019s since 1975 and was one of three Benedictine monks who were finalists for the job after Reinhart left.<\/p>\n<p>In the statement, Koopmann cited the successes in his tenure as president. But he also referenced the stresses of the job.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \u201cThe stress of this position is significant,\u201d he said. \u201cAlthough I am in good health now, I know I need to restore a better balance in my life. By focusing on the year ahead and the transition to a new leader, I am able to begin that process now.\u201d\n\nA native of Waterloo, Iowa, Koopmann graduated from St. John\u2019s in 1968 with a music degree. He earned his Master of Divinity from St. John\u2019s in 1981 and did post-doctoral work at the Royal Academy of Music in London and at Juilliard School of Music in New York.\n\nKoopmann professed as a monk of St. John\u2019s Abbey on Sept. 21, 1971, and was ordained a priest on June 6, 1981. He was chair of the CSB\/SJU music department from 1977-83 and 1985-86 and has served as director of international studies programs to Salzburg, Austria, and South Africa.\n\nHe has advanced music degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the University of Iowa and has released a number of recordings since 1994.\n\nThe other finalists for the job when Koopmann was selected to replace Reinhart included the Rev.
