An alleged sexual assault occurred on the St. John\u2019s University campus\u00a0between Saturday, Sept. 1 and Sunday, Sept. 2.<\/p>\n
The reported incident occurred between a St. Ben\u2019s and St. John\u2019s\u00a0student in an on-campus student residence.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was an alleged assault and we are currently following through,\u201d\u00a0said SJU Dean of Students Mike Connolly, \u201cIt is very important that\u00a0students put safety at the forefront when gathering after hours for\u00a0parties.\u201d<\/p>\n
St. John\u2019s Life Safety is still investigating an alleged sexual\u00a0assault last weekend.<\/p>\n
The Stearns County Sheriff\u2019s Office also received a complaint\u00a0regarding this incident and is looking into the matter. The event is\u00a0believed to be an isolated incident, and Dean Connolly wants to ensure\u00a0students that while there is no reason to be concerned, it is always\u00a0important to keep safety in mind.<\/p>\n
In response to the recent incident, CSB\/SJU is executing standard\u00a0protocol through the Joint Complaint Procedure for Sexual Assault\u00a0Violations Involving Students. In addition, both campuses are\u00a0stressing safety information and precautions to reduce the risk of\u00a0future offensives.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not just about raising the issue that sexual assault is bad, but\u00a0it\u2019s understanding that we all contribute to the environment we live\u00a0in,\u201d Assistant Director of Health Promotion Lori Klapperich said. \u201cWe\u00a0need to think about how we can create an environment that doesn\u2019t\u00a0condone, tolerate, enable, accept or turn our backs on this issue.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to the results of the CSB\/SJU General Health Survey, 16-17\u00a0percent of women and 9-10 percent of men at CSB\/SJU have experienced\u00a0unwanted sexual touching in the last year.<\/p>\n
\u201c80-90 percent of sexual assault occurs between people who know each\u00a0other,\u201d Klapperich said. \u201cWe can all support a victim by supporting\u00a0our environment, essentially it\u2019s being for them, listening and\u00a0supporting them. It is one of the most intimate crimes that can happen\u00a0and some victims never recover.\u201d<\/p>\n
Klapperich also encourages students to begin to talk about sex as a\u00a0serious topic to determine what their values are and how they can\u00a0spread that message.<\/p>\n
Life Safety Services in addition to Stearns County Sheriff\u2019s Office\u00a0has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and according to\u00a0University administration, measures will be taken pending the results\u00a0of the case.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs part of the investigation, information is confidential,\u201d Connolly\u00a0said. \u201cThe situation is being carefully examined.\u201d<\/p>\n
