Memorable bishop leaves room for Spirit

On Oct. 27, Jerome Hanus will become the coadjutor archbishop of Dubuque, Iowa. Much to my surprise, I find myself overcome with grief at this occurrence. For the past seven years, Jerome Hanus has been the bishop of St. Cloud. He has been an excellent leader, and I am very sad to see him leave. Thus, as part of my grief therapy, I have decided to devote this bulletin article to his memory.

Bishop’s apology welcome response to abuse victims

“The church could take a giant step toward restored health if others found the courage to follow the example of Hanus. For all the hurt that had piled up between bishops and victims, Hanus’ simple remarks were met with a standing ovation.”

Flying Priests and African Deacons

Mel, the prior, an Irishman, took us to the casino to gamble last night. En route he talked re: the missionary activities of the monks. Each weekend 4 or 5 of them fly to the outlying islands of Exuma, Eleuthera, San Salvador, etc., to celebrate liturgy. Some fly in the monastery’s private plane (Bro. Barry Gearman, pilot), others on the Bahamian airline.

Addresses and Statements by Abbot Timothy Kelly, OSB

from Abbot Timothy Kelly’s response to a Professor of the University:

. . . we try to stress three points:

  1. Sexual abuse and sexual exploitation by monks are immoral and will not be tolerated within the Saint John’s community.
  2. As a monastic community, we must support and care for victims and their families.
  3. We cannot change the past, but we are doing everything possible to prevent abuse now and in the future. We hope to do even more as we learn more about sexual abuse and exploitation.

. . . What we have done is to face the issue squarely, answered truthfully and sincerely.

The Blessing

On the feast of the Baptism of the Lord in a liturgy resplendent with symbolism Abbot Timothy Kelly was blessed as the ninth abbot of Saint John’s Abbey. It was a family affair with invitations to students, faculty, the many other laity who share our work, members of our parishes, friends and personal contacts. Even the conferral of the abbatial blessing by our local diocesan bishop, an action that signified the relationship of Saint John’s to the universal Church, was performed by a member of the extended Benedictine family, St. Cloud’s Bishop Jerome Hanus, OSB, former abbot of Conception Abbey in Missouri.

An Issue of Responsibility

With the recent allegations Or sexual assault at the St. John’s Prep School questions are once again arising as to what really is going on at Saint John’s University. Although there are many ways of being untruthful, the St. John’s community may be particularly guilty of creating the facade that a small utopia exists somewhere slightly beyond one’s view from Interstate 94. As our infamous bell-banner stands above the horizon of evergreens, one envisions a learning environment complete with Christian morality. Unfortunately, recent charges of sexual misconduct threaten that image.
