ISTI Holds First National Conference

When individuals of any community fail in thier integrity, everyone is a victim and everyone suffers. Nowhere is this more evident than when clergy and religious compromise leadership and violate their trust through sexual misconduct and other forms of power abuse. This challenge is enormous and can be appropriately met not in secrecy and isolation but in close cooperation among the research and helping professions, law and religion, and the champions of intervention and treatment, by listening carefully to those who are violated by the misuse of power and trust, and attending to their comunities and structures of leadership.

The Future of Monasticism

“The future hold difficulties for those monasteries tied to and identified with institutions. Sponsored institutions eventually take on their own lives and identities and in many instances begin to become the identifying mark of the monastery. However, in the future a monastery with a sponsored institution will have to claim its own life and identity, find its own space, place, and allow for the possibility of a new vision, and provide work opportunities for new monastics who may not be attracted to the institution.” – Fr. Dan Ward, OSB, 1998

Many of you already know that Saint John’s Abbey has two dependent mission priories. In addition to Saint Augustine’s Priory in the Bahamas, there is Saint Anselm’s Priory in Tokyo, Japan.

Homily for the Funeral of Jerome Theisen

The picture given to us of God by Jesus in the gospel we have just heard is the picture reflected in the very life of Christ himself, for Christ Jesus is the exact image of the invisible God through whom we come to know God intimately. Here is our God who is the owner of the house, who rewards faithful servants by seating them at table, fastening his own belt and serving them as though God were the servant.
