Four members of the Saint John’s monastic and academic communities have begun assignments at Saint Augustine’s Monastery, Nassau, Bahamas, this summer — namely, Frs. Dan Ward, Richard Eckroth, Antony Hellenberg and Francisco Schulte.

Fr. Dan, professor of civil and church law, a faculty resident and former chair of the government department, is the newly appointed Prior of the Nassau monastic community which was established by Saint John’s Abbey in 1946.

The monastery is the supporting sponsor of St. Augustine’s College, a 7-12 grade school, and cosponsors with CSB of the Benedictine University College. Fr. Dan plans to concentrate on making the monastery a place of peace and prayer for guests, both from the Bahamas and else where.

Fr. Richard, former member of the SJU philosophy department, returns to the Bahamas where he had worked in various parishes for 16 years (1977-1993). He is now the plant manager of the monastery and the chaplain of Saint MArtin’s Monastery in Nassau.

Fr. Antony, former SJU director of academic advising and a member of the modern and classical languages department, now serves as the coordinator of student services at the Benedictine University College on the campus of the St. Augustine’s Monastery. His position entails serving as registrar and director of advising services and responsibilities in the areas of student admissions, orientation, scholarship, recruitment and convocations programming.

Fr. Francisco, who taught the initial classes in Hispanic ministry offered at Saint John’s School of Theology and assisted in the retreat and conference work of the Spiritual Life Program of the abbey, has been appointed the subprior, or second ranking official, of the Nassau monastery. He is also the director of the Oblates of Saint Benedict of the Bahamas.
