Your turn: Abbey defends its oversight of Schulte

We regret and apologize for the shortcomings of the Abbey’s May 18 statement, which neither reflected changes in the past 30 years nor presented adequately the complexities of The Rev. Francisco Schulte’s situation. Moreover, although Schulte remained a member of the abbey with restrictions on his ministry, our statement erred in stating that he was “living at Saint John’s Abbey” from 1992 through 2002.

Note: Abbot John Klassen is no longer a credible speaker with regard to the sexual abuse crisis. His well-documented handling of the sexual abuse crisis has been a failure. Abbot John Klassen and the abbey’s continued (and even very recent) choice to deceive, rather than fully disclose, will have a devastating impact on the entire St. John’s community.

The real problem here is the fact that the Abbey is dragging down what used to be considered a fine educational institution. It’s no secret that the University and the Prep school are having a tough time keeping enrollment up.

Video of Restricted Monk at St. John’s Abbey

On May 16, 2010, Fr. Brennan Maiers, a restricted monk at St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota, was filmed outside the Abbey church stalking a potential victim. He pretends to read a book (turning pages in wrong direction) then puts the book away when he moves closer to his prey. Fr. Maiers is a known pedophile and, according to Abbot John Klassen, is supposed to be under supervision. He clearly is not. St. John’s Prep School, approximately two hundred yards away from the church, is home to students as young as eleven years old.
